These are some of the
Des Moines Area Missions we are Involved in.
Central Iowa Shelter & Services: Provides food, shelter and referrals to homeless in the Des Moines area. We provide an evening meal once or twice a year at the Shelter, in addition to playing Bingo and other volunteer jobs as needed. Each Christmas we collect clothing and hygiene items and take handmade blankets to the center.
DMARC Food Pantry: The Emergency Food Pantry is a ministry coordinated by the Des Moines Area Religious Council. The Pantry provides free food for people who would otherwise go hungry until other resources can be tapped. Ankeny Christian Church collects an offering of non-perishable food items on the third Sunday of every month. Cash donations are also accepted. Simply bring your food items or money into the sanctuary on the designated Sunday and place them in the shopping cart provided in the fellowship hall. You can also help by volunteering to transport the food collected to the warehouse. We have various food collection events depending on the need of the pantry. We have a yearly Food Bowl challenge that pits Iowa sports teams against the other to see who can bring in the most food.
Hunger Hike: A thousand people Hike for hunger once a year on the second Sunday in October to increase community consciousness and concern about local and world-wide hunger and its root causes. The walk raises funds to be used by non-profit agencies and programs to help alleviate the problem of hunger. We gather near the east entrance of the Hall of Laureates (old City Library) between Walnut and Locust at 1:30 p.m. We hike as a group along the Des Moines River Walk, visit some of the features along the river walk, and return to the Hall of the Laureates (World Food Prize) Building. We hope you will join us in this hike in the new year.
