Open and Affirming:

We are a place where forgiveness is practiced, hospitality offered, and hope is alive. Ankeny Christian Church is a place where we don’t insist that you have to believe exactly the same things that everyone else believes. Even your doubts are welcome here. It’s a place of grace and freedom where we explore the scriptures together and learn from each other’s experiences.

What We Are Not:

We’re not a church that drones on and on about money or the end of the world. We aren’t interested in heaping up guilt trips on you. We are a church that doesn’t demonize people; rather we affirm that we are all children of God.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Ankeny Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is part the international Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  When we say we are a Christian Church, it is not to say that we are the only Christians; rather we are simply Christian. We all see ourselves as Disciples or followers of Jesus Christ.

Beliefs and practices associated with Disciples include:

A Gracious God, Loving Savior and Active Helper: We believe in a loving Creator who calls us from brokenness to wholeness. Our Savior, Jesus Christ offers us salvation, forgiveness and the path to personal transformation. We believe the Holy Spirit is God’s active presence in the world today.

Scripture: We discover the intersection of God’s story with our story in this mysterious book. Scripture informs and guides our path as the central story of our lives. One does not have to take scripture literally, but we should take all of it seriously as a means through which God communicates to us today.

Open Communion: The Lord’s Supper, or Communion is celebrated in weekly worship. You need not be a member of Ankeny Christian Church or any other church to receive communion. God’s grace is available to all–including children at the Lord’s table. No matter how much we may disagree on matters of life and faith we are united at the table of grace of forgiveness.

Freedom of belief: Disciples are called together around one essential of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.

Baptism by immersion: In baptism the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust in God begins. Disciples practice baptism by immersion, and honor the baptisms of all other Christian traditions.

Belief in the oneness of the church: All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.

The ministry of all believers: Both clergy and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth. We are all servants of Christ.
