History of the Church
As the city of Ankeny began to explode with new growth, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) knew this was an opportunity to reach out to people as they made their new homes. From it’s inception, our congregation has been dedicated to helping newcomers to Ankeny find a home for faith and fellowship.
Ankeny Christian Church was established in the late summer months of 1976 with services held in Rev. Gerald (Jerry) Sawyer’s basement. The congregation quickly outgrew the home by Christmas of the same year and moved into rented space. On Easter Sunday 1979 the congregation broke ground on the first unit of the church. As the congregation grew in 1988, we broke ground for a new sanctuary and administrative unit.
As the church’s outreach to the community expanded, we erected a Community Life Center which houses the Ankeny Christian Childcare and provides opportunity for recreation, exercise, study and cultural opportunities for the church and congregation.
Serving others has always been at the heart of our life. We participate in many local charities and regularly send teams for international work projects.
In December, 2007, Rev. David Clark began serving as our pastor. Since then we have found a renewed sense of vitality and energy. The church added a second, more contemporary service in October 2008.
In June 2010 a three-year facility-improvement campaign was initiated. Projects during the campaign include a new parking lot, remodeled bathrooms, a redesigned youth room and improved lighting throughout the sanctuary and building.
Feb 12, 2014, ACC hired Owen Cayton as the new senior pastor at Ankeny Christian Church. We are excited to begin this new phase in the life of Ankeny Christian Church as we work to make a difference in the lives of the members of ACC and the people who live and work in our community.
